Between the move and the job change, I find myself with a commute of 26, 13, 2 miles!* Oh, it is glorious, my friends! Even more glorious is that it makes a pleasant bike ride. Of course, I haven't actually ridden a bike on a regular basis since I was 15. For some reason, it's not quite as easy as when I was 15. Perhaps, however, there's a certain amount of shelter provided by a car - beyond the roof, I mean. Now that I am, almost literally and perhaps figuratively in the middle of traffic, I have made the following observations:
- It's the little things that make a big difference. (*ahem* Wind. Potholes. Piles of fallen pine needles.)
- There's no bad weather, only bad clothing choices. (And they can both change remarkably quickly).
- You don't have to wear the spandex to be a successful bike commuter.
- There is a lot of roadkill. I nearly hit a squirrel, myself.
- There is an absurd amount of energy required to go up a hill.
- Biking is the closest I'll ever get to understanding physics.
- If a million people bike to work, others will still be impressed by the 101 millionth person to bike to work.
- There is, apparently, a secret club of hardcore bikers who bike to work in the rain (or those who dislike the bus too much to seek alternate transportation), and a special nod to acknowledge fellow members.
- You don't talk about bike club.
-
If you are in shape, you should have no problem biking 30 miles to work without sweating. This is an ugly, blatant lie. I read something similar online. To whoever wrote it: um. No offense, but...screw you, dude. - There is no such thing as a chic corporate biker who shows up to work polished and ready to impress. I don't know what those bikers in business suits are trying to pull, but I don't believe it for a second
- I am not nearly in the kind of shape I thought I was.
- I am getting there quickly, and it feels pretty amazing!
- Biking makes curling up and knitting at home seem well-earned.
Et vous? :)
Cheers!
Daisy
*yes, I have actually traveled 26 miles on a daily basis to get to work. I'm so sorry, planet!

Yay for a short bike commute! I always said that I would bike (or walk) if I ever had commutes that short. It still hasn't happened. :-/
My husband rides his bike to and from work every day, but it's only about 7.5 miles each way, and he wears the whole spandex kit...but he also has his own office to change/clean up in, and he's a guy so that makes things like hair and makeup a bit easier too.
Nice! That will save on gas!
You are a woman of virtue and inestimable value. Bravo! I have never been much of a bike rider and would rather walk where traffic is concerned. Good on you!!
You are awesome!!!!!!! :D
